CAN THE PERSON YOU CREATE GIVE THEIR CONSENT?

WHY NOT GRANT ANIMALS THE SAME MORAL CONSIDERATION AS HUMANS?

DOES "NATURAL" MEAN "MORALLY JUSTIFIABLE?"

WELCOME TO ANTINATALISM

ANTINATALISM JAPAN

Antinatalism Japan is a domestic organization in Japan advocating against creation of any painient (capable of expariencing pain) beings. We aim to encourage people to put into practice '無生殖主義' (museishoku-shugi), an anti-speciesist, morally correct form of antinatalism.

ANTINATALISM

Antinatalism is an ethical view that it is wrong to create a painient – a being with the capacity to experience pain – whether directly or indirectly.
One example of a direct way to create a painient is procreation, while indirect ways of doing so include paying for animal products, which financially supports forced procreation of non-human animals.
In Japanese, antinatalism is often called ‘hanshusshou-shugi,’ but we use an alternative term ‘museishoku-shugi’ for the reasons explained here.

ARGUMENTS FOR ANTINATALISM

Some of the arguments in favor of antinatalism include the following.

Damaged Red Car

Risk

A painient, once created, gets exposed to a wide range of risks to experience pain.
A human being, for example, can be harmed by many things such as hunger, injury, illness, loss of loved ones, traffic accidents, and financial anxiety.

Signing A Document

Lack of consent

A painient does not exist before being created, and therefore cannot be given an opportunity to decide whether or not to give any sort of consent to being created, let alone a well-informed one after having someone to explain the risks that come with existence.

Shooting Practice Silhouette

Harms to others

In many cases, a painient can not only get harmed but also harm other painients.
A human being, for example, can do harm to other members of the human society due to their unconscious bias and subsequent discriminatory conduct, or through pure malice.
They are also likely to do harm to non-human animals, because of the social structure where part of the tax they pay will be used to support animal agriculture, or inevitably contributing to environmental destruction simply by existing as a human on this planet.

ANTINATALISM IS NOT…

Skull And Crossbones

Pro-mortalism

Antinatalism only prohibits starting the existence of a painient.
The morality of ending the existence of a painient is simply out of scope of antinatalism.

Blurred People Crowd

Version of 'antinatalism' that is only applied to humans

The reason human beings deserve moral consideration and therefore are the object of protection by antinatalism is not that they belong to the species of homo sapiens, but their painience (capacity to experience pain).
Applying antinatalism only to one type of painients would be logically inconsistent and speciesist.

Personal grief over having been created

Antinatalism is an ethical view and is about what we, moral agents, should and should not do, and is not a label for a certain kind of grief.
It may be true that those who have a worse life containing a lot of pain are usually in a position where realizing the legitimacy of antinatalism is easy, and it should be no surprise if the majority of antinatalists happen to be such people.
However, that would have nothing to do with how true antinatalism is, just like racism, where understanding the wrongness of racism is easy when one happens to be a victim of it.

Fossilized Marine Reptile

Pro-extinctionism

Antinatalism is an ethical view that it is wrong to create a painient.
Painients are usually considered to be living organisms, and if creation of such beings stops, extinction would be a natural outcome.
Antinatalism, however, says nothing about whether extinction of species should be a goal to pursue or not.

COMMON OBJECTIONS AND RESPONSES

Antinatalism opposes creation of painients regardless of the means.
It is conceivable that it is going to be possible in the future to create painients by means unavailable today, such as cloning technologies, but for the sake of simplicity, the act of creating a painient will be referred to as ‘procreation’ in the objection/response list below.

Judge's Gavel
Antinatalism is wrong because procreation is legal.

Laws are a form of applied ethics, and mere tools to make right things happen.
Therefore laws have no power to determine what is truly correct or not.
Sexism and racism, for example, had been legal for a long time, but the wide agreement that they are actually morally wrong led to illegalization of such discriminatory behaviors.
Ethics always comes before laws.

Referee Pointing
Whether or not to procreate is a personal choice.

An action is 'a personal choice' only when there is no victim.
Creation of someone means creation of the root cause of literally every single thing that happens to them in their life, which is their very existence.
This is clearly not 'a personal choice.'

Steak On Fork
Whether or not to pay for animal products is a personal choice.

An action is 'a personal choice' only when it affects no one negatively.
Paying for animal products means outsourcing the violence of creating, torturing, and brutally killing non-human animals.
This is clearly not 'a personal choice.'

Raised Fists Unity
Humans and animals have the right to be created. Antinatalism violates that right.

Humans and non-human animals never to be created cannot have any rights because they do not exist, and therefore could never have their rights violated.
Only we, already existing painients, have rights, and as a result, get exposed to the chance of having our rights violated.

Antinatalism takes away the opportunities of having a good life from humans and animals.

Who exactly does antinatalism take the opportunities away?
Humans and animals who are never to be created, literally, never exist, so they cannot be deprived of anything.
Moreover, even if we create them with the goal of giving them a happy life, there is no guarantee that it would definitely work.
If it fails, the created one gets harmed.
If it succeeds, the act of creating them only turned out not to be wrong purely in terms of results, but it is only 'not wrong' in the same sense as it is not wrong to throw a rock down a mountain, which happens not to hit anyone.
The wrongness of the gamble of creating them remains true regardless of the result.

You can't say procreation is morally wrong. It's only your life that's bad, and the created ones usually have good lives.

It is true that, when one experiences a lot of pain and subsequently regret being created, they are in a position where it is easy for them to realize the legitimacy of antinatalism.
However, the fact that the person regrets being created has no impact on whether antinatalism is correct or not, just like racism is wrong no matter who says it is wrong; whether it is a victim of racist treatment or not does not matter.

Furthermore, this response to antinatalism seems to presuppose that we should, or can, create those who would have good lives even if it risks creating those who would have bad ones, which is a utilitarian mistake where the well-being of an individual is sacrificed for the benefit to many.

It's impossible to acquire the consent of those yet to be born.

Whether someone can give the consent to being created or not does not determine whether we need the consent before creating them.
If the impossibility to ask for consent means the absence of need to ask, then it should be acceptable to have sex with someone who is too drunk to give their proper consent.

You say the consent to being created can't be acquired, but that's the case with the consent to not being created too!

If you create someone, the harm of creating them without their consent is done.
If you do not, however, then the person who you do not create literally does not exist, so they cannot be harmed by having something done or not done without their consent.

I'm glad I was born. I should give my descendants the same gift.

You and your descendants are separate entities.
They will not necessarily experience the same things as you do in their lives.
Even if they did, how much pain or pleasure they experience would vary from one person to another.
However highly you rate your own experience in life has no impact on whether you should create a new person or not.

We are animals. It's natural for us to procreate.

It is indeed natural for us to procreate, but does 'natural' mean 'morally correct'?
If it does, then things we consider to be obviously immoral such as murder, assault, or rape, should also be morally correct.
What is natural is not necessarily ethical.

Life does contain some pain, but the pain helps us grow.

Regarding the morality of inflicting pain on someone in order to help their growth, there is room for discussion if we are talking about already existing humans or animals; for example, it is widely considered acceptable to force human children to go to school and to have a hard time, as a means to help them survive the society in the future.
However, when it comes to those who do not exist yet, they simply do not need to learn and grow, because they do not exist.
It is only if we create them that they will find themselves in a situation where they are in need of growth.
Creating needs where there were none and causing pain to the person with those needs is clearly irrational, and no justification for procreation can be found here.

Life does contain pain, but that makes pleasure even better.

That is not a reason to allow creation of new painients.
The created one would experience not only some pain that serves that purpose but also some that does not at all.
Even if they fortunately avoid going through such meaningless pain, they never should have needed or wanted to experience pleasure.
Creating someone so that they can experience great pleasure is entirely irrational.

Mother Holding Baby
I have already procreated, so I can't be an antinatalist now.

Giving up on doing the right thing just because you have made a mistake before is the same kind of dishonest and evil way of resisting change as telling yourself you don't deserve to be a safe driver and driving erratically just because you have caused a car crash before.
Whether you have a clean license or not has nothing to do with whether you should drive safely.
All we can do is make the future better than it otherwise would be, unless someone develops a time machine.
Some anti-sexist activists would have been sexists themselves; some vegan activists would have been deeply ashamed of their past where they sustained their body by consuming animal products.
Nothing about their past can make them fake anti-sexists or fake vegans.
The same applies to antinatalism.

HOW TO BE AN ANTINATALIST

Practice of antinatalism consists of two main elements: refusal to procreate and being vegan.

Refusal to procreate

Humans are generally considered painient, so an antinatalist does not create any more of them.

Being vegan

Some non-human animals, due to their physical similarities to humans such as the nervous system, are considered painient and therefore moral patients.
They too need to be protected from the harms of being created, so an antinatalist does not support forced births of farmed animals or procreation of wild animals, meaning that it should be difficult to tell an antinatalist apart from a regular, non-antinatalist vegan.

* ‘Being vegan’ here only means being indistinguishable from vegans by not doing things vegans avoid doing. Whether antinatalism theoretically includes veganism or not depends on how veganism is defined, so we refrain from offering any official view on this matter.

REFUSAL TO PROCREATE

  • Not having heterosexual intercourse  is the single form of antinatalist practice with the greatest chance of success.

  • When having heterosexual intercourse, appropriate use of contraception methods can reduce the chance of accidental procreation.
However, many cases of failed contraception have been reported, making this slightly unreliable as a means to practice antinatalism.

  • Procedures such as vasectomy or bisalp (bilateral salpingectomy) allow heterosexual intercourse, effectively, with no risk of accidental pregnancy.

  • Theoretically, traditional procreation is not the only possible way to create a human being.
An antinatalist considers any use of technology that allows us to reproduce new humans to be ethically incorrect.

BEING VEGAN

  • Humans' survival or health doesn't require food coming from animals such as meat, eggs, and milk.
Appropriate plant-based diet will keep you perfectly healthy while not contributing to forced procreation of animals financially.

  • Many non-human animals are created and tortured in order to produce a wide variety of products.
Some obvious examples include leather gloves, leather coats, and fur coats.
Some non-vegan products may be harder to spot, like a clothing item made of wool-blend fabrics.

  • Some cosmetics are developed with animals getting tortured for experiments.
Paying for such products means financially supporting forced creation of future test subjects.
JAVA makes it easier to avoid doing so by making ‘JAVA Cosmetics Guidebook’ available, helping antinatalists live vegan life more easily.

WHAT IS ANTINATALISM?

Antinatalism is an ethical view that any painient (capable of experiencing pain) beings should not be created.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN ANTINATALIST

Being an antinatalist means:

  1. You argue that procreation of any painient beings, including humans, is ethically wrong.

  2. You support and practice veganism to minimize animals' suffering.

  3. You argue that painient beings that have already been born deserve the ethical right to have their suffering minimized.

WHAT IT DOES NOT MEAN TO BE AN ANTINATALIST

Being an antinatalist DOES NOT mean:

  1. You argue that only human beings should stop procreating.

  2. You argue that painient beings other than humans do not deserve to have their suffering minimized.

  3. You do not care how much pain already-born painient beings experience as long as it serves the purpose of keeping the unborn forever unborn.

    WHY WE FOUNDED THE AAPJ

We have seen a recent spread of prejudice against antinatalism.

On the other hand, more and more people, who name themselves antinatalists, discriminate against others and act in a rather unethical way.

We named a truly anti-speciesist and ethical form of antinatalism ‘無生殖主義’ (museishoku-shugi, anti-procreationism) and founded the Association of Anti-Procreationism in Japan (the AAPJ) on January 29, 2021 for the above-mentioned reasons.

We aim to have as many people as possible be aware of anti-procreationism and practice it not to create any more potentially sentient beings.

    OUR PHILOSOPHY

We are opposed to any moral justification of creating potentially sentient beings, and aim to minimize the pain experienced by any existing sentient beings around the world.

In addition, we aim to build a world with the minimum pain in a peaceful, impartial, and ethical way.

    We have 3 goals:

    (1) Normalizing anti-procreationism

We call a truly impartial and ethical form of antinatalism ‘無生殖主義’ (museishoku-shugi/anti-procreationism).

We will try to normalize it by practicing street activism, hosting events, and posting on social media, video sharing websites and our official website.

Our activities will be practiced in a democratic, non-violent, and ethical manner.

    (2) Practicing 無生殖主義 (museishoku-shugi/anti-procreationism)

Members of the AAPJ will not procreate or encourage others to procreate.

We fight against social pressure into procreation, and fight for a better and easier-to-use adoption/foster system.

    (3) Creating a society with less suffering

We are not only opposed to creating potentially sentient beings, but aim to create a society with less suffering by committing to a variety of activities.

Our focus is on anti-discrimination, anti-exploitation (veganism), social welfare, fundraising, volunteer activities, and education.

Note: Since the launch of this organization, its name has changed from 'The Association of Anti-Procreationism in Japan' (The AAPJ in short) to 'Antinatalism Japan.'
